Philadelphia, PA—Iannelli’s Brick Oven Bakery, which has been in business for 112 years, announced that they have begun shipping their products nationwide.
As the third-generation owner of Iannelli’s Brick Oven Bakery, Vincent Iannelli was looking to expand their East Passyunk Ave business beyond the Philadelphia area by shipping their famous Tomato Pies nationwide.
“It all starts with the gravy,” said Vincent, who grew up in the Italian Market working between his grandfather’s businesses: Claudio Specialty Foods, and Iannelli’s Brick Oven Bakery. “It’s all about quality and not quantity, and I make everything myself. I’m excited to ship these products nationwide, because tomato pie is a classic item that so many people love, but you can’t get an authentic tomato pie just anywhere.”
Although Tomato Pies originated in New York in 1905, Philadelphia’s love of the sauce-laden pizza dough began rooting itself in Philly pizza shops only a mere 5 years later. Today, those 18 by 24-inch “gravy pies” are loved by Philadelphian’s. And in South Philly—Iannelli’s Brick Oven Bakery is one of the sought-after spots serving the warm and delicious Tomato Pies. So, it is understandable why Iannelli’s wanted to expand their 112-year-old tradition by offering their sought-after Tomato Pies into the homes (and kitchens) across the country.
The first phase of nationwide shipping includes tomato pie and gravy (which Iannelli’s has been shipping for a few years), with pizza kits and cookie kits to follow. Iannelli’s offers Crab Gravy; Diablo Crab Gravy; Grandma’s Gravy; and Diablo Gravy, which ranges from $18.50 to $28.50 per jar. The crab gravy is made with fresh crabs, as Iannelli, a spear fisherman, catches, cleans, and cooks every crab that goes into every batch.
And with every batch of gravy, you can choose to indulge your taste buds by pooling the gravy into the middle of one of the crusts in the same way that Vincent makes them and using the same dough as his Stromboli—leaving the comforting taste, similar to freshly baked bread, at the tip of your tongue. Or you can slurp down one of their delicious gravies with another perfect vehicle from their kitchen (to yours) by adding their Bucatini Pasta to your order!
Iannelli’s, which is only open for walk-in operations 15 days a year during the fall and spring, is now offering customers the ability to order online as long as there is inventory in stock. However, you do not want to delay; if you’re thinking about ordering one of Vincent’s Tomato Pies—he plans to only ship 150 pies per month, and not a single one more—meaning that once he is sold out for the month, customers will have to wait until the next month to place their order.
As for the details: perishable items will be shipped Mondays and Tuesdays, with a freezer pack in a box with insulated containers. Iannelli’s will include heating and serving instructions while also making video instructions available. There will also be a bundle pack option, that comes with a seasoned pan, dough, and gravy.
