Union Win at home to move in to a tie for 2nd Place in the East
Saturday night in front of a packed crowd at Subaru park the Philadelphia Union looked to continue their climb up the eastern conference standings. They come into the night 3 points behind their opponent Nashville SC, who sit in second place in the East. A win tonight would not only help the home teams playoff standings but be a barometer of just how good this team really is.
First Half
The Union had a chance to cash in on a friendly whistle in the 4’ of the game but were unable to capitalize on the free kick. Philly nearly went up 1-0 in the 10’ but a kick from Daniel Gazdag went just wide after the Nashville goalkeeper got a hand finger on it. However they would get on the board a little later. In the 18’ Kacper Przybylko knocked in the penalty kick to put the Union up 1 nil. The goal was the 10th of the year for the man they call the friendly striker👻⚽. Unfortunately he would be hit with a yellow card caution in the 27’ after a hard foul. The defense settled in to finish the half and after 45’ of play the score remained 1-0. The Union out shot Nashville 5-0 in the half.
Second Half
The second half began as a defensive struggle. Neither team was able to get anything going offensively. By the 63’ Nashville still did not have a shot on goal. the Union upped the physicality and as a result Jamiro Monteiro was issued a yellow card caution. Of all the Union players, the player who had to be happiest about their continued defensive effort in the final 45, had to be Andre Blake. The “brick wall” as he is called had an easy evening in the first half . And although the shots started to pile up in the second nothing really came too close to getting past him. by the 90’ mark the Union still led 1-0. But there was still 5’ of stoppage time. The Union was able to push through it though and come out with the victory.
